8. Regulation in human health

Smoking

Smoking adversely affects HRV. After 3 minutes after the first cigarette, HRV decreases, the LF power increases markedly, and HF decreases. Changes in HRV parameters more significant at standing position. HRV indicators return to the initial level no earlier than in 10 minutes. With long-term smoking changes in HRV are firmly fixed. Chronic smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with a tension of vegetative regulation due to constant stimulation of vagal nuclei with respiratory nuclei, severe endarteritis with serious baroreflex control, and other complications.
In a chronic smoker, additional studies of HRV in particular protocols on the state of rapid and moderate regulation make sense. It would not be superfluous to test each of the prescribed drugs in its acute pharmacological test for its effect on HRV as a whole.
